Barbara Verity, Journalist, Photographer and Gilles Peloquin, Retired from Management
"Explorer David Thompson in the Eastern Townships in 1834"
For this, our first meeting of the 2012-2013 season, we welcome historians Barbara Verity and Gilles Péloquin who will speak about David Thompson, an early explorer and surveyor of the Eastern Townships and the subject of their recent book – “Even the Owl is Not Heard: David Thompson’s 1834 Journals in the Eastern Townships of Québec”. Barbara and Gilles have actually followed Thompson’s paths in the eastern part of the Townships, and have transcribed his daily journals. Those writings describe the flora, fauna and terrain as well as the people he met and the adventures he encountered. Thompson was a master explorer, surveyor, map-maker and naturalist. To learn about this very interesting man, please refer to “en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Thompson_(explorer)”.
Barbara Verity is a retired journalist, photographer and former editor of The Sherbrooke Record and of the Townships Sun. She has worked in communications for the Townshippers’ Association and Concordia University. Barbara has a B.A. from Bishops and an MA from Concordia. Originally from Winnipeg, Gilles Péloquin is retired from a career in management, including at the Ontario Ministry of Health. Many Townshippers may recollect that he owned and operated the Pilsen Restaurant in North Hatley from 1988 to 2006.
